Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro Day 2 Results: Field Narrowed to Final 12

THREE FORMER SUPERGIRL CHAMPS ADVANCE TO FACE OFF ON SUNDAY

Defending Champ Malia Manuel, Two-Time Winner Coco Ho, Former Champ Sage Erickson, and Supergirl Vet Paige Hareb Among Top Pros Advancing to Sunday’s Finals

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (August 9, 2014) – Huge crowds flocked to the Oceanside Pier as the world’s top surfers battled to secure their spot in the Round of 12 at the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro — the largest female surf competition in ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) history and the only ASP 6-Star event in North America. Sunday’s competition is sure to impress with three former Supergirl champs taking to the waves, including current title-holder, Malia Manuel, and two-time winner, Coco Ho.

Malia Manuel (Kauai, HI), defending Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro Champion, tore through two heats today, belting fins-free turns on both her forehand and backhand. A perennial event standout throughout her career, Manuel is hoping to find her way deep into the final rounds once again in 2014.

“It’s a fun weekend and not many girls can say they surfed a 6-Star QS on their birthday,” said Malia Manuel, who turned 21 today. “It’s my sixth Supergirl and it’s always so fun to come out to this event. The atmosphere is better and better every year and there are always little girls that are happy to see you when you come out of the water.

Sage Erickson (Ventura, CA), 23, 2012 event winner, was electric at the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro, belting the competition’s highest heat total of 17.40 on her backhand in Round 4. Erickson, currently No. 6 on the ASP QS, is looking to post another big result in Oceanside in hopes of solidifying a position on the 2015 WCT before the final European leg of the QS season.

“I have a bigger connection with this event than I do with any other event,” said previous Supergirl champ, Sage Erickson. “Last year I missed out on that victory and I’m really looking forward to trying to get that back. If I could wear that Supergirl cape again, it would be a dream. Hopefully dreams come true this weekend!”

Paige Hareb (NZL), 24, two-time event runner-up, claimed two heat wins while advancing to the Round of 12, capitalizing on the lefthanders breaking into Oceanside Pier to post her top scores.

“I just remembered back to last year’s final and it was low tide closeouts and Malia (Manuel) won with one big turn,” Hareb said. “I just tried to start the heat like that and stay busy. I feel confident out here. I always have fun and find fun waves. Hopefully I can keep doing that this time.”

Silvana Lima (BRA), 30, currently top-ranked on the ASP QS and past WCT competitor, carried her successful 2014 campaign to Oceanside, earning the day’s high single-wave score of 8.93. Lima also hopes a strong result in Oceanside will propel her back among the elite ASP Top 17 for 2015.
